💡 When will the district return to the traditional math sequence of Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II be effective?

The district will return to the traditional math sequence of Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II as of Fall 2024.

💡 My child will be entering middle school next year. What math courses will they take in middle school?

Your child will follow the traditional middle school and high school math sequence beginning with 6th grade mathematics curriculum, 7th grade mathematics, and option of 8th grade mathematics or Algebra I for their eighth grade year.

💡 My child is a current 7th grader. What course will they take next school year?

Your child will be the first cohort of students returning to the traditional math sequence of Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II respectively. Your child will also be enrolled in a one quarter math elective, Math Applications 8, which will focus on major content standards that will support your child’s readiness for high school level mathematics. See the math sequence chart below.

💡 My child is currently in Geometry. What math course will they take next year?

If your child is currently placed in Geometry, they will remain on the district’s current math sequence. Next year, your child will take Algebra I, followed by Algebra II. Please see the math sequence chart below.

💡 My child has already completed the Geometry and Algebra I math sequence. How will the district support my child’s academic progress in mathematics moving forward?

Based on data collected from student classroom performance, teachers, and the New Jersey State Graduation Proficiency Assessment for mathematics, the district is confident students have experienced an in-depth and effective course in Geometry. According to the New Jersey State Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA), which is a graduation requirement for 11th grade students and covers content learned in both Algebra I and Geometry, Ridgewood High School demonstrated an 88.1% proficiency rate for the exam compared to the state average of 55% proficiency.

However, we do understand the concerns regarding the non-traditional math pathway our students experienced. In response to these concerns, the district will be evaluating the mathematics curriculum across all courses to integrate review of geometry standards when applicable. Our goal is to provide additional exposure to geometry content across various courses, enhancing previous learned skills taught during Geometry that apply algebraic skills. In addition, the district is researching additional support opportunities available to all students to best support their mathematical progress as they continue in Ridgewood Public Schools.
